Is it right for you?

Who heating design is for

A good fit if

  • You're getting a heat pump and want it sized to your home, not guessed
  • Your heating isn't performing the way it should, and you want to know why
  • You're building, extending or upgrading, and want the system designed before it's fitted

Probably not the right fit if

  • You want a figure over the phone. A proper heat loss calculation needs a survey of your home. For a rough idea first, try Heat Geek's instant estimate
  • Your heating works well and you're only replacing like for like. See boilers

Our aim is to help you make an informed decision, with realistic expectations.

Cost

What affects the cost of heating design

How we price

Every situation is different, including distance and other factors, so we don't list prices.

Quotations follow a property assessment and technical survey.

What moves the price

  • Your home. Its size and how many rooms
  • New or existing. Designing a new system, or upgrading one

What's included

  • Heat loss calculations. Your home's heating requirement
  • Your radiators or underfloor heating. An assessment of what you have
  • Hydraulic design. The hydraulic performance of the proposed system
  • Equipment selection. Equipment appropriate to your home
  • Commissioning and optimisation. Testing, commissioning and system optimisation
  • Handover. An explanation of the system operation and controls

The process

What happens, from first call to handover

Kirk personally leads the technical assessment, design and installation work.

  1. Initial discussion

To understand your property and what you need.

  2. Assessment and survey

A property assessment and technical survey.

  3. Calculations and design

Heat loss calculations, hydraulic design and equipment selection.

  4. Quotation, explained

A detailed quotation and explanation of the proposed work.

  5. Commissioning and optimisation

Testing, commissioning and system optimisation, then a handover that explains the system operation and controls.

What to expect

  • Disruption is one of the things customers ask about most. We address these through careful assessment, transparent explanations and detailed heating system design.
  • Project timescales vary depending on the size and complexity of the installation. Your quotation explains the proposed installation.

Our promises

  • A detailed quotation, explainedThe proposed installation explained, with manufacturer warranties and any additional service arrangements set out in it.
  • Honest, informed adviceWe explain the available options and recommend solutions based on your home's requirements, rather than simply selling equipment.
  • Quality workmanshipWe aim to deliver neat, carefully planned installations using high quality components.

Project timescales vary depending on the size and complexity of the installation.

Case studies

Bushey, HertfordshireA chalet bungalow

The job
The original system design allowed a 45°C flow temperature at the design outside temperature of -2.3°C, with a heat loss of 10.8 kW.
The result
A 12 kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus. Our approach enabled a maximum weather compensated flow temperature of 40°C, and a SCOP of over 4.0 so far, with updates to follow.

Before

HertfordshireExtended to 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms

The job
Two 25 kW boilers, 50 kW in total, and previous quotes suggesting another boiler to bring the capacity up to 65 kW. Our heat loss survey came to 24.5 kW.
The result
One 32 kW Vaillant ecoTEC plus, range rated down to 24.5 kW once the loft was insulated, with a 400 litre cylinder and underfloor heating in the extension. The client has since reported cost savings and the best hot water ever, despite having more bathrooms.

Kirk is a fantastic heating engineer, who ensures they deliver the right solution for each house, and has gone the extra mile for us to improve the heating and water quality in our house.

Antony S.Google review · October 2026

Kirk Ferguson of NuRenewables Heating is the most knowledgeable heating engineer/plumber I have ever used and performed an absolutely superb job reworking how my entire heating and hot water system was configured for a large extension. This included installing a new boiler, powertank (to improve the water pressure), hot water cylinder, 3 bathrooms and a kitchen amongst other works.

Kirk is a delight to have in the house, is super tidy, but most of all is an expert in his field and applies a scientific approach to his installations to maximise the efficiency for the homeowner.

Daniele F.Google review · October 2026

Kirk is a master, he helped me to decide which heat pump was suitable for my property,
He take care of everything from the start to the end of the job.
I very impressed of his knowledge. Very recommend.

Questions

The terms, explained

What happens in a heat loss survey?

A heat loss survey looks at your home room by room: the size of each room, and how its walls, floors, roof, windows and doors are built and insulated. That goes into a heat loss calculation, which is used to size the heat pump or boiler, the radiators or underfloor heating, and the pipework.

What is a heat loss calculation?

A calculation of how much heat your home loses through its walls, floors, roof, windows and ventilation on a cold day. It tells you how much heat the system needs to deliver to keep each room comfortable.

Which standard do your heat loss calculations follow?

Our heat-loss calculations follow the current applicable BS EN 12831-1 standard and UK National Annex, taking into account building fabric, insulation, airtightness, ventilation, geographical location, exposure and design temperatures to establish accurate heating requirements.

Can a heat pump be sized from my old boiler?

Historical boiler sizes and outdated heat-loss assumptions should never automatically determine the size of a replacement heat pump. A building's heating demand can change significantly following modernisation. We calculate for the building as it exists today, not the building it was thirty years ago. See air changes and accurate heat-loss calculations.

What is flow temperature, and why does it matter?

It's the temperature of the water leaving the heat pump or boiler to go round your radiators or underfloor heating. The lower it can be while still keeping you warm, the less hard a heat pump has to work, and the more efficiently it runs.

What is weather compensation?

A control that adjusts the flow temperature to the weather outside: warmer water on cold days, cooler water on mild ones. It keeps the system running as efficiently as it can for most of the year.

What is SCOP?

Seasonal coefficient of performance: how many units of heat a heat pump gives you for each unit of electricity it uses, over a whole heating season. The higher, the better.

Do you design systems for heat pumps and boilers?

Yes. We design and install heat pumps, boilers, central heating and underfloor heating.
